Precipitation is occurs throughout the year, however most during summer the rainfall increases as it is heavier and is accompanied by thunders. Most of the winter precipitation comes in snow. The ground is covered in snow for an average of 40 days each winter in the north and west. In the south and east it lasts for as much as 60 to 70 days. The snow remains for up to 100 days a year in the Carpathians and thus the area is famous for winter sports. However, throughout most of Poland the total annual precipitation is rather low, approximately between 500 mm and 625 mm.
Poland weather is quite similar all over the country. It almost never gets excessively hot, but sunny weather and occasional droughts do occur. Winters are particularly cold and the length of severe cold weather varies significantly each year.
During the time that strong easterly winds blow, severe cold occurs and under these circumstances the winter cold is similar to that of Russia. When an anticyclone settles over Eastern Europe, the cold may be prolonged but it is milder as the wind chill is less and the weather alternates between foggy and sunny.
Similar to western and central Europe, Poland weather may be variable at all times of the year; however winters are most likely to have prolonged periods of one stable type of weather. Daily sunshine hours average from 1 to 2 hours in midwinter to as much as 6 to 7 hours during summer.
